Show #123: GI Joe (1983 - 1985)

Honouring America's annual tradition of celebrating their independence by blowing things up, it's a sample party platter of the GI Joe miniseries!

While we're not entire strangers to GI Joe we deemed a franchise as venerable as this one was worthy of a closer look, removed from the bizarre influence of secret snake people and back to good old fashioned red lasers vs blue lasers. The results surprise even us as we find both a fond portrayal of the American ideal embracing all cultures & backgrounds and even stranger goings on than a dozen GI Joe movies. All that plus sailor scam artists, impressions of famous actors and the subliminal message to kids with destructive younger siblings everywhere!

A podcast much belated, but not for any fear of discussing this 1986 toy property tie-in from Hasbro and Sunbow as we find ourselves pleasantly surprised yet again. The war on giant monsters from beneath the Earth eventually gives way to more light-hearted shenanigans which leads to a slight disparity of tone. However an entertaining cast of heroes, villains and weird creatures with amusingly sarcastic dialogue and grotesque spectacle helps it stand out from the crowd, despite not achieving the long-running successes of its peers.

The first in what will become many Hasbro/Sunbow productions we talk about, Visionaries goes down a whole lot easier than it's contemporaries such as GI Joe and Transformers. This may be because of it's single season run or help from the talented Osamu Dezaki and TMS Entertainment. Maybe a wizard did it! Listen to hear our attempts at dramatic reading and learn what Jake is REALLY afraid of.

For those interested I shall be in attendance at Kitacon at the Hilton Metropole near Birmingham Airport this coming weekend of Friday the 13th. Seek me out and say hello/punch me in the face, wherever applicable.
