Show #185: Richard Williams' A Christmas Carol

The clarion call of Christmas rouses us from our long slumber to discuss some Dickens once again, this time with Richard Williams' take on A Christmas Carol!

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

Some traditions are too special to let pass unmarked and thus we briefly surface to celebrate the legacy of the late Richard Williams, a giant of animation whose ouvre we touched upon earlier this year. Alongside the equally legendary Chuck Jones and Ken Harris they bring a more macabre adaptation of the classic festive fable in a fraction of the time and with twice the horror! Its message of goodwill even in the harshest of worlds rings all the truer for it, a sentiment we hope to carry forward upon the day of our dark renewal in the new year. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to one & all and you'll hear from us again in 2020!

Show #183: The Thief And The Cobbler

A podcast thirty one accumulated hours in the making, SOTSM broaches the subject of the animation albatross known as The Thief And The Cobbler!

Click Here To Download ( Right Click, Save As)

With the recent passing of the esteemed Richard Williams and the tributes that followed a pair of titles repeatedly stood out: his undeniably popular work Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and another convoluted and perhaps notorious production called The Thief And The Cobbler. Delayed, waylaid and recut into various releases in its unfinished state, many had given up Williams' grand artistic statement as folly. But is this being uncharitable to what he strove to achieve not just in the film itself but animation as a whole? Crime, corporate skullduggery and a years long quest for perfection almost distract us from savouring a cartoon spectacle the likes of which may never be seen again!

Let’s Go! #117 – Let’s Reinvent Ramen

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure departs the stage for now but Let's Go continues apace with all the other things you could be watching. Hope you brought your appetite!

SOTSM x DITB: The Anime That Didn’t Make Us #7 – Lupin III Part 3, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nadesico

Dwayne Moloney, podcast man-about-town, took a trip back in time with Dynamite In The Brain to pore over anime titles of days past that could have been formative experiences in their youth were it not for pesky things like geographical barriers or their absence from terrestrial television. Getting the hypothetical nostalgia treatment this time around are the unfairly maligned Lupin The Third Part 3, the Giant Robo casting department that is Mitsuteru Yokayama's adaptation of Romance Of The Three Kingdoms and the dense mecha satire/homage Martian Successor Nadesico. Those were the good old days! (maybe)

Adapted from a best-belling book series by controversial German author Akif Pirincci, Felidae's matinee-friendly looking characters belie a pretty graphic thriller steeped in the murky atmosphere of a pulp novella. We've finally got the Let's Go Gang together for their most important case yet! Brian Smith joins us for another new format wherein we examine the transformative nature of live-action titles into animation or vice-versa and discover what is gained, lost or irrevocably changed in the process. To start with we look at one of the more notorious examples of a cartoon "homaging"a popular live sitcom, as Hanna Barbera was often wont to do, when Phil Silvers and his famous Sergeant Bilko persona are pitted against his hand-drawn doppleganger Top Cat. Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

Noted directors and Netflix darlings David Fincher and Tim Miller present their latest outing on the ubiquitous streaming service, a collection of animated science fiction shorts for adult audiences of varying content and quality all ostensibly united under one or more of the themes mentioned in its title. Is it fertile ground for an interrogation of complex ideas relating to artificial intelligence, the purpose of existence and the nature of the soul? Or is it carte blanche to let animators' libidos run wild in the shallowest interpretation of "mature" possible? Famous authors, faithful renderings of genitalia and the recurring ratio problems with anthology works may just guide us to the answer!

Show #177: Pilot Pot Luck - Coulda Been A Contender!

Unsatisfied with enjoying just the raw brutality contained within the next podcast topic we wildly speculate upon the action-packed vistas of violence that could've, should've or never will be!

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

Not everybody can be champ, but as media production and distribution methods advance over time we're seeing a reasonable amount of weird new content that might never have had a shot otherwise. Taking Netflix's Grappler Baki as a starting point we wax lyrical about the future fighting chances of some conceptual cartoons that never took it all the way: Genndy Tartakovsky's cursed Popeye movie, Yoshiaki Kawajiri's similarly stymied sequel to Ninja Scroll, the hack & slash hero homage that was Korgoth Of Barbaria and the brief glimmer of greatness that were the Marvel Anime teaser trailers. Is this an exercise in futility? We ask ourselves that every day, but let's have fun finding out together!
