A new locale and a fresh start beckons, paring down the enormous cast to its comedic core before turning them loose with all the carte blanche a billion dollar super science corporation allows. Almost fated to be forever left unresolved on a cliffhanger, can those Venture boys keep their place in our hearts until the upcoming feature length finale bids them a fond farewell? Could such a thing ever be completely satisfactory? Is there a shameless reference they haven't wedged in yet? We ponder the answers to some of these and more over a Post-Podcast Repaste from that nice Italian place on the corner!

Our boys have grown up so much! And that's just us going off on a longer-than-expected tear about the Venture Brothers when we thought we had the measure of them. Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer saw that coming though, proceeding to sweep aside sizeable swathes of their world of aimless adventurers and vacuous villains to allow something new to grow. It was a tough row to hoe for both the creators and the fans incensed at the change, but did all their hard work pay off? Teenage rebellion, the sins of the fathers and a catchy hit single underscore an immense inventory of a turbulent time, still keeping a little space for a Post-Podcast Repaste of course.

Arch-villain Brian Smith is unleashed to cast a wiser eye upon the awkward transitionary phase of the Adult Swim darling in our second retrospective chunk, comprising series 2 and 3. While we get a better sense of the cartoon it would become, and the ambitions of Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer for it beyond an outlet for coarse humour, The Venture Brothers still had a lot of growing up to do. The good news is you get a whole lot more: more dumb-voiced duos! More genuine pathos! Ever more oblique cultural references! And more to come way down the line with the prospect of a movie to cap off the whole lot. It's bigger, it's louder, and it's got an appetite for a Post-Podcast Repaste to match!

Jake de Búrca joins our expedition into the world of mystery, danger and offbeat musical references inhabited by those strange siblings The Venture Brothers. Dreamed up by the even more peculiar pairing of Jackson Publick & Doc Hammer it proved an ostentatious outpouring of their influences and enthusiasms that set the show apart from its stablemates at Adult Swim. Our multi-stage journey begins here in the murk of the first series and its preceding pilot, wherein we may discover the Venture Brothers' not-so-secret origins and glimpse their potential for growth beyond arbitrary late-night television weirdness. Of course this'll require a space age Post-Podcast Repaste to satiate us for more voyages with the Ventures in the tomorrow that is yet to be!

Show #195: Samurai Jack - The Final Chapter

Almost 5 years to the day since we last had him on, Leon Everett of Ace Comicals emerges from the mists of time to lay to rest a legendary hero, whose long and continually inspiring journey finally came to a close against all odds. Samurai Jack seems a story whose timelessness was due to its lack of a definitive ending, but director Genndy Tartakovsky saw a ripe opportunity to bring the curtain down alongside much of the original creative team. With a more sombre and brooding atmosphere that throws that distance of years into stark relief can Jack really go home again? The call of the void, stupid sexy Aku and more Twin Peaks Series 3 comparisons than one would expect add up an epic saga of a recording, leaving us hungry for a heroic feast of a Post-Podcast Repaste!

Not everybody can be champ, but as media production and distribution methods advance over time we're seeing a reasonable amount of weird new content that might never have had a shot otherwise. Taking Netflix's Grappler Baki as a starting point we wax lyrical about the future fighting chances of some conceptual cartoons that never took it all the way: Genndy Tartakovsky's cursed Popeye movie, Yoshiaki Kawajiri's similarly stymied sequel to Ninja Scroll, the hack & slash hero homage that was Korgoth Of Barbaria and the brief glimmer of greatness that were the Marvel Anime teaser trailers. Is this an exercise in futility? We ask ourselves that every day, but let's have fun finding out together!

Based on the film of the same name and continuing on from it's last season we follow the ongoing adventures of Black Dynamite and his crew taking down threats to the Black Community and skewering prominent figures alike in their relentlessly irreverent fashion. A much more patchy affair than their last outing, the series occasionally loses focus of where its best humour lies and strays into overly crude territory or often over-recycles some of the best known gags from the film. At it's best though the show offers great if bizarre insight into the pressing societal issues of past and present, because even in our modern age of civil discourse sometimes you just gotta stand up and give your problems a figurative or perhaps literal ass kicking.

When you ask the guys who made Scooby Doo to create a cartoon for you odds are it's gonna involve mystery solving teens, and sure enough that happens here. But mystery solving teens led by Mr T? That might have legs Joe! Wretched animation and a quickly worn out premise do the show no favours, but getting to watch cartoon Mr T beat up on smugglers / ghost pirates / Panthermen and live action Mr T dispense his worldly wisdom provides some amusing novelty for a little while.

One of our favourite movies got made into one of our favourite cartoons, or at least a pretty good cartoon. Hampered a bit by drawing on the gags made famous by it's live action source a little too frequently the episodes currently on offer can be hit or miss. The hits have all the power of a Black Dynamite kung-fu strike to the skull though so we're itching to know if we'll get any more of this.
