Show #113: Fire and Ice

We brave the savage, frozen wastes of a new year on a trip to the boilerplate fantasy realm of Fire and Ice!

We said we'd give old Ralph Bakshi another spin of the wheel after our last encounter but we're finding maybe fantasy may not be his forte. In spite of an impressive assemblage of talent including Frank Frazetta, an artist who defined the look of these kind of stories, Fire and Ice never really adds up to the sum of its parts. It really serves as more of a template left unfilled, which is all the more maddening when one wonders what could have been produced had that creative energy been fully utilised.

Show #82: Shut Up Huffer!

Niall & Dwayne merge with Greg Driver and Paul Shipley to form a super robot dinosaur to tackle the awesome might of season one of The Transformers!

A podcast much delayed, but we shall never be silenced. Even by the cold, hard reality that another cartoon from our youth ain't quite what we thought it was cracked up to be, a fanciful memory eroded by cruddy animation and a relentless soundtrack but not enough to wear away a solid foundation of great voice acting, cool robots and crazy schemes. Considering our appreciation of the subsequent properties which arose from these humble origins it's only fair that we give their source its due, a source of passion that was stayed with us unwaveringly even after all these years.

Show #50: Sick Podcast Scum

For our 50th episode the pressures of podcasting have caused us to regress to a childlike state with Brian Smith of Dynamite In The Brain and Peppa Pig.

Don't worry, you have the right show. This topic was suggested to us after we left the subject of our 50th installment open to listener feedback and what better way to mark the occasion than by covering something a little outside our normal spectrum. There's plenty to discuss, so listen in for tales of seafaring, dinosaurs, nocturnal accidents and the corruption of young minds!

Show #29: The Cure Is Lasers

Niall and Dwayne combine their cyborg bodies via the miracle of bionic transference to form the ultimate being, DWIALL, the only one with the power capable of handling Attack Of The Super Monsters, AKA Dinosaur War Izenborg!

An interesting experiment combining elements of traditional animation, live action rubber suits and modelwork, Attack Of The Supermonsters doesn't gel those constituent elements together as smoothly as you'd think. It is however unrepentantly silly and at least provides us with some entertaining clips and soundbites of awkward dialogue.

Show #24: NO LITTLE ROK

Fighting caveman crime in a not-so-future time, we delve into the exploits of the ridiculously overpowered Hanna Barbera superhero Mighty Mightor!

What of the good old days? A simpler time when men were men, or Vulturemen or Tigermen or Abominable Snow Men. When cartoon studios could get away with severely restricted animation and recycled plots because them kids don't know any better. Good riddance to those days, but Mightor gets an A for effort from us if only for Alex Toth's design work and the possibilities of these characters and setting in the right hands.

Show #23: GET ME CHOPPER BACKUP

We're feeling the need, the need for speed this week as we jet off with the heroic aces of Hanna Barbera's Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron!

Another show on the roster of The Funtastic World of Hanna Barbera (and unfortunately another cartoon sealed within the Warner Archive Collection), we were a bit apprehensive to return to this concentrated shot of 90s animated action. Our luck holds once again though as Swat Kats arrives loaded with great artistry and animation and some stellar performances from the voice cast. Half-remembered images from your youth can come up trumps once in a while!

Show #9: Dinoroni, A Cured Meat Made From Dinosaurs

We're back! After a hiatus due to coursework and convention attendance Niall and D return to the sorry task of discussing misplaced nostalgia with the 1988 cartoon Dino Riders!

Oh dear. We thought we were on such a roll with Visionaries that we'd try another 80s property and see how it holds up. The answer: not well! Dino Riders represents the epitome of squandering a great concept with a half-assed cartoon that is interminable to watch and even harder to squeeze any enjoyment from. On the bright side, the world (and the Smithsonian museum) got some pretty cool dinosaur toys out of it!
