Our continuing journey through the morass of cartoon pitches and pilots both old and new has turned up a few more disparate delicacies this time around. We start up with feisty spirited newcomer Obituary: A Grave Beginning before tackling the crowdfunded conundrum that is Urbance. Lastly we tuck into Plastic Man in Puddle Trouble, a rich and satisfying snack that is sure to repeat on us later!

Show #147: ULTRAFORCE

Pouches? Ponytails? Shredded jeans? SLIME? The Nineties called and they want ULTRAFORCE back!

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

Recent pop cultural trends have shown there exists a need out there amongst some audiences for their comic book media to be stern, mature and taken seriously. However history has proven that this is not a new occurrence and just like the early to mid 1990s this approach more often than not left them ripe for ridicule. Ultraforce is an exemplar of this heady period where common sense feared to tread and naturally we fall down a rabbit hole of questionable business practices, even more questionable fashion choices and a whole lot of weird ooze.

Show #119: Black Panther

We put the civil in Civil War as a minor difference of opinion erupts on the subject of mad motion comic Black Panther!

Didn't intend on having two superhero themed shows come out one after another but these things keep getting made! Before that bandwagon though there was Black Panther, a TV adaptation of the comic recounting T'challa and his country's rise to prominence against all comers. Equal parts clumsy political allegory and groan inducing quip fest it remains notable for being an instance of placing an African hero at the fore, a trend we hope continues in the future.

Show #118: Superman The Animated Series

Don't call it a retcon! We tread familiar territory and beyond, this time with the help of David J Majors for a sincere salute to Superman: The Animated Series!

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

Remember when folks were excited about the prospect of Superman and Batman sharing the screen together? Well you can be again if you haven't sampled the delights of this 1996 series, which does a similar admirable job to the Dark Knight's celebrated TV outing in modernising and presenting an ideal version of the monolithic hero. Bright, bombastic and bittersweet, its praises can not be sung loud enough, especially considering the groundwork it laid for future DC animated universe installments to come.

Show #104: Teen Titans GO!

Renowned insane villain Brian Smith from Dynamite In The Brain graces us with the Most Offensive Cartoon Ever, the one and only Teen Titans Go!

The Teen Titans, five of Earth's mightiest heroes, face the challenges of everyday life! A proven sitcom idea that pays off in spades thanks to this irreverent superhero portrayal courtesy of Aaron Horvath, Micheal Jelenic and company. The comedy only gets better as the Titans are put in ever more bizarre situations yet this only serves to stoke the inferno of internet ire, a host of people who would do well to maybe not continually expect straightforward comic book action from an obvious gag show week after week.

Getting weary of those lame-os at Marvel and DC? Experience the exciting alternative that is Gen 13: The Movie!

Landing in our midst via the mystical power of Youtube suggested videos comes Gen 13, based on the Wildstorm comic of the same name about superpowered teens fighting the government. The film makes the most of its somewhat generic source material with the directorial talents of Kevin Altieri of Batman: TAS and a few standout performances from the voice cast, making for a pretty decent TV movie with a surprising amount of character.

Show #96: The President Wants To See You, WITH HIS ONE GOOD EYE

Woah woah woah, you can't just jump into that new Avengers movie right away! To avoid confusion you better catch up on all the exciting backstory of the woeful Avengers: United They Stand!

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

Not everything can be a popular summer blockbuster. Heck, not everything can be a wonderfully bizarre, barely animated radio play. Such was the case with the Avengers once upon a time, long before their current worldwide popularity, when they served as disposal fodder for a toyline cartoon nobody wanted. Over-designed characters, terrible gimmicks, mediocre animation and sub-soap opera level drama converge into a perfect disaster that would best any superhero. On the plus side: SILLY VOICES.

Show #76: I'm Still Plugged In!

Greg Driver returns to examine the strange mutation that gave the world the X-Men.

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

The 1992 X-Men TV series is remembered fondly by many as a bright, action packed cartoon that was the most authentic on-screen depiction of the mighty mutants. This went a long way towards overlooking the technical flaws of the show, not to mention the inherent weirdness prevalent even in just this first season. But like the comics have always taught us we must not be afraid of what is different or bizarre and embrace them for what makes them great, and so in spite of the cynicism that often occurs when revisiting a nostalgia property we inexplicably find ourselves having a good time watching. Comics are crazy as a matter of course anyways man so let's just enjoy the ride!

Greg Driver bypasses our many layers of security and intrudes upon the domain of Dexter's Laboratory!

One of the many success stories emerging from the Cartoon Cartoon programme block, Dexter's Lab swiftly moves on from its initial premise to transform into a genre-hopping action comedy of incredible substance. Genndy Tartakovsky lets his influences run wild on the screen, the sheer quality injected into every frame holding up even now. So much happens that we couldn't cover in a single podcast even if we wanted to which speaks highly of the cartoon that even we are overcome by its awesome power.

It's the obligatory joke number episode! However the joke's on us as we are struck full force by the punchline of Stripperella.

Comics personality / dirty old man Stan Lee brings us one of his varying-in-quality side projects, this time a cartoon series about an exotic dancer who fights crime whatever irreverent, offensive or crass form it may take. The drawbacks of the show are immediately apparent but are all the more maddening for the glimmers of quality that occasionally surface, from surprisingly good animation and sharp writing to a genuinely likeable performance from Pamela Anderson as the titular character, all of which are unfortunately mired in the risible premise.

Show #67: Mojo Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

SOTSM adds a special ingredient to the podcast concoction - Ian Maddison of Something Awful's Current Releases and the Powerpuff Girls Movie!

Click Here To Download (Right Click, Save As)

A theatrical tie-in to the popular TV series from Craig McCracken, Lauren Faust and Genndy Tartakovsky, the Powerpuff Girls Movie gives us the long version of how the tiny terrific trio assumed the mantle of heroism and grew to be accepted by a society that hates and fears them. All very heavy material for a kid's cartoon which the movie deals with admirably and in a manner that puts some of today's modern superhero features to shame.

You can find Ian at Something Awful's Current Releases movie reviews and on Twitter. Be sure to keep an eye out for his upcoming book all about Dracula!
