Show #195: Samurai Jack - The Final Chapter
Almost 5 years to the day since we last had him on, Leon Everett of Ace Comicals emerges from the mists of time to lay to rest a legendary hero, whose long and continually inspiring journey finally came to a close against all odds. Samurai Jack seems a story whose timelessness was due to its lack of a definitive ending, but director Genndy Tartakovsky saw a ripe opportunity to bring the curtain down alongside much of the original creative team. With a more sombre and brooding atmosphere that throws that distance of years into stark relief can Jack really go home again? The call of the void, stupid sexy Aku and more Twin Peaks Series 3 comparisons than one would expect add up an epic saga of a recording, leaving us hungry for a heroic feast of a Post-Podcast Repaste!

An ego trip by name and by nature as this TV movie served to cap off the run of the successful TV series with an all guns blazing bonanza that maybe goes a little too all-in on the action and a little too light on the beloved weirdo humour. And that's without going into the time travel aspect, which neither IMDB or Niall have grasped fully, and the secret childhood wishes of your hosts revealed live on air!

One of the shows this podcast was made for, a samurai in the future chopping up hordes of killer robots! It's not all mech massacre though; Genndy Tartakovsky, patron saint of SOTSM, and his company of incredible talent exploit Samurai Jack's malleable setting and characters to the fullest, delivering cinema grade action and atmosphere one moment and providing perfectly pitched levity the next. An unfinished symphony if ever there was one, and a cartoon that will stand the test of time for generations.

One of the many success stories emerging from the Cartoon Cartoon programme block, Dexter's Lab swiftly moves on from its initial premise to transform into a genre-hopping action comedy of incredible substance. Genndy Tartakovsky lets his influences run wild on the screen, the sheer quality injected into every frame holding up even now. So much happens that we couldn't cover in a single podcast even if we wanted to which speaks highly of the cartoon that even we are overcome by its awesome power.

A theatrical tie-in to the popular TV series from Craig McCracken, Lauren Faust and Genndy Tartakovsky, the Powerpuff Girls Movie gives us the long version of how the tiny terrific trio assumed the mantle of heroism and grew to be accepted by a society that hates and fears them. All very heavy material for a kid's cartoon which the movie deals with admirably and in a manner that puts some of today's modern superhero features to shame.

The recently cancelled CG Clone Wars cartoon caught our interest recently and in turn brought our thoughts back to Genndy Tartakovsky's 2003 adaptation where it all began. Tartakovsky and his collaborators bring their flair for character design and action sequences beautifully into the Star Wars universe, leading to some exhilarating and perhaps fantastical set pieces. Continuity fans beware however as Jerry sets us straight on how the show has played havoc with the carefully established Star Wars chronology.

We're back from the grave after yet another spot of bother. Some dastardly crooks (i.e, the dudes who kept not delivering Dwayne's computer charger) were up to no good. Can Mr T and the gang solve the mystery of The Secret Of The Sailor Madness?

When you ask the guys who made Scooby Doo to create a cartoon for you odds are it's gonna involve mystery solving teens, and sure enough that happens here. But mystery solving teens led by Mr T? That might have legs Joe! Wretched animation and a quickly worn out premise do the show no favours, but getting to watch cartoon Mr T beat up on smugglers / ghost pirates / Panthermen and live action Mr T dispense his worldly wisdom provides some amusing novelty for a little while.

Another show on the roster of The Funtastic World of Hanna Barbera (and unfortunately another cartoon sealed within the Warner Archive Collection), we were a bit apprehensive to return to this concentrated shot of 90s animated action. Our luck holds once again though as Swat Kats arrives loaded with great artistry and animation and some stellar performances from the voice cast. Half-remembered images from your youth can come up trumps once in a while!
